Herbonauts are thus invited to identify information present on the images (place and date of collection, collector, geographical coordinates, etc.) and to transcribe them in information fields linked to the database. To this end, the program sets up missions that include a set of images selected with the aim of answering scientific, historical or museum questions. On the one hand, these missions are fun quests, contributors will pass levels, earn badges, reach the podium of "top contributors", etc. On the other hand, these are collaborative quests, the answers and information provided for each image will be co-constructed by the contributions and exchanges between several Herbonauts.
Since its creation in 2013 by the National Museum of Natural History, this participatory science program has recorded more than 7 million data entered and validated. The Herbonautes have thus contributed to the computerization and availability for research, metadata and descriptive data of more than 581,000 specimens from herbarium collections.
